Updates on the outage

Canvas access restored with limited functionality

Updated: May 10, 2026 | 12:05p

This message is being sent to all IU students.

Canvas is now available with limited functionality following the recent cybersecurity incident affecting Instructure, the company that operates the Canvas learning management system.

Limited functionality. Courses and files are now available within Canvas. While access to core tools native to Canvas has been restored, the functionality of some integrated tools (such as those linked to Microsoft) remains limited. An up-to-date list of available features can be viewed at status.iu.edu. As recovery efforts continue, you may experience intermittent access issues or temporarily unavailable features.

Keep learning. Keep Learning also has information to help you close out your spring semester activities, an FAQ, and support resources. It will continue to be updated with the most up-to-date guidance.

Stay alert for phishing attempts. We encourage you to stay alert for phishing attempts and report suspicious activity.

If you are an IU Bloomington (IUB) student enrolled in summer courses, please continue monitoring your university email for any additional updates from your summer course instructors. The summer semester at IUB begins on May 12 — earlier than on other campuses — so, your instructors may need to share timely information with you via email.

We recognize the disruption this outage caused during a critical academic period and our teams are working around the clock to address this issue. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as our teams work to restore service as safely and quickly as possible.

Stay in touch with your instructors

This is an update for the IU community regarding the Canvas global outage affecting IU and many other institutions.

We recognize that the broad Canvas outage continues to disrupt classes, coursework, and finals during a busy and meaningful time of year. The situation is evolving and we want to ensure you have the latest information, resources and guidance as we head into the weekend.

IU technology and cybersecurity teams are working diligently to ensure services can be safely restored as quickly as possible. While some institutions have begun restoring limited Canvas functionality, IU has not yet received independent third-party confirmation that the Canvas environment is secure. Restoring access before that verification could put our community's data at risk. We remain committed to restoring your ability to teach and learn while also protecting your data and IU systems.

Remain vigilant. Following any widespread cybersecurity incident like this one, it is common to see an increase in phishing attempts and scam activity. Practice caution with unexpected emails, especially those that reference the Canvas outage. Learn to spot and report phishing at phishing.iu.edu.

Teaching resources for faculty:

  • The Keep Teaching website has resources to help instructors maintain course continuity during the outage. The site is being updated regularly as new guidance and information becomes available.
  • Teaching Centers are available to support instructors in using alternative assessments, delivery methods, and practical workarounds to keep teaching during this disruption.

Learning resources for students:

The Keep Learning website has resources and technology to help students stay connected and on track with their studies.

Stay up to date. For real-time updates on Canvas availability, visit status.iu.edu.

Thank you for your patience and resilience as we tackle this issue together.
